I was wondering how far down the list being able to add remote project references from the UI was ?
Ideally it would keep a track of my most popular ones.

Somewhere in the middle. 
Whats most important to you: just to be easily able to add a reference given a URL you have (say on the pasteboard), or a full “browse/repository” mode?
The former is easily done; the latter still requires a lot of research, planning and thinking for how we want to solve this exactly…
I think just being able to add the url, keeping my recently used ones would be great.
I did think about a full browser but then decided maybe that would complicate things. I would rather you focus on adding stuff I cant get in github desktop
