I asked CodeBot to do some stuff that required retrieving information from svn and encountered all kind of problems. Finally, CodeBot asked me to type some svn commands in the Command window and paste the results.
I asked CodeBot to write a report that explains what went wrong:
Summary
When using the integrated source-control API for SVN, file-focused history/diff workflows are not reliable. In the same repository context, file status queries behave as expected, but file history queries return broader repository activity, and revision-range diff queries can return empty output even when the user expects file-level changes.
Environment
- Client: CodeBot source-control integration
- VCS: SVN working copy
- Scope: Generic repository usage (no repository-specific assumptions)
Problem statement The SVN integration appears to partially ignore file scoping for history retrieval and may fail to return usable output for revision-range diffs in file-focused analysis flows.
Expected behavior
- A file-scoped history request should return only history entries relevant to the requested file/path.
- A revision-range diff request for a file should return meaningful file-level changes when changes exist in that range.
- Results should be consistent across status, history, and diff operations when targeting the same file/path.
Actual behavior
- File-scoped status requests succeed and appear correctly scoped.
- File-scoped history requests can return mixed/broader repository-level entries rather than file-only entries.
- Revision-range diff requests can return empty output in scenarios where users expect file-level delta evidence.
Impact
- Prevents reliable audit/reconciliation workflows that require file-specific evidence.
- Forces users to rely on external/manual SVN commands for trustworthy per-file history and diff validation.
- Reduces confidence in automated reporting based on integrated SVN output.
Generic reproduction flow
- Run file-scoped status for a target path in an SVN working copy.
- Run file-scoped history/log for the same target path.
- Run revision-range diff for that target path.
- Compare outputs for consistency.
Observed failure pattern
- Status is file-scoped.
- History/log includes broader unrelated activity.
- Range diff may return no usable output.
Frequency Intermittent-to-reproducible depending on repository state; observed repeatedly in practical reporting attempts.
Workaround Use direct SVN CLI/file-specific commands outside the integration for final evidence collection.
Requested fix
- Enforce strict file/path scoping in history/log operations.
- Correct revision-range diff handling for file-scoped requests.
- Add integration tests validating consistency between status/log/diff for the same file target.
- Return explicit diagnostic reasons when diff output is empty (for example: no changes, invalid range, path mismatch, or unsupported scope) instead of a generic empty result.
